Flocks of tourists descend Santorini every year to bask in the sun and admire the stunning surroundings. Topping that list is the search for a breathtaking sunset.
Watching the sunset is not so easy in Santorini, as fellow gazers all have the same idea. The perfect spots are no secret and it takes patience and determination to get that spot and shot.
Oia is undoubtedly the most popular place to see the sunset in Santorini. Coach hordes of sun gazers crowd the area around the ruins of Byzantine Castle to catch that perfect moment.
My advice would be to come down a few hours earlier and grab a seat in a restaurant with a view or perch yourself on the castle ruins with a picnic and a few drinks. Beware! The tourists can be loud and obnoxious and could potentially ruin that romantic moment. However, the sunsets are really something, persistence makes it all worth it.
Especially when the skies look like this...
Sunset at Akrotiri Lighthouse
The journey down to Akrotiri was alone something special while we raced to see the sunset on the quad. It looked like it was going to be perfect as the sky was clear blue with barely a cloud in sight.
On the opposite side of the island is definitely a more quiet affair when it comes to watching the sun go down.
There is something about the calming sound of the sea and being huddled up to a loved one that makes this place especially romantic. The golden haze across the skies is truly something to be seen and a totally unforgettable experience.
Where have you seen the most spectacular sunset?
